Exclusive: Interview With VOICE OF GLASS Back En Route For The Top

VOICE OF GLASS ; Las Vegas, Nevada.

Q.) What’s the name of band for those who don’t know?

A.) The name of our band is VOICE OF GLASS.

Q.) Where are you located?

A.)We are located at Las Vegas, Nevada.

Q.) What is the meaning behind your name?

A.)Glass is transparent and fragile and to us it symbolizes the human heart and soul. Our lyrics come from different personal experiences, emotions, struggles, triumphs and falls and they are a representation of the way we feel, deep inside our hearts.

And just as glass itself is transparent, we feel like we have nothing to hide; we strive to be honest and real with each other and with our audience.

The fragility of glass represents our vulnerability. You become vulnerable every time you choose to open up to others and be honest with yourself and the ones around you. In the same way, since glass is a material that easily brakes, it mirrors the way a human heart is – easy to be broken. That is why it’s important who you trust, give your heart to. It needs to be handled with care. If it happens to be in the right hands, it will be cherished and it will remain whole; if it’s in the wrong hands, it will most likely brake.

We strive to be the “voice” of our hearts, of the “glass”, hoping that what we share in our songs can resonate with many, and even help many find resolution and inspiration for their lives through our music.

Q.) What got you into music?

A.) The vocalist of the band (Olya Meek) speaking here: I’ve been exposed to music since very young age. I performed for my neighbors on my street along other kids from the neighborhood, I participated in church choirs and music clubs as a teenager and took extensive vocal lessons at age 22. I always felt like I was supposed to be the frontwoman of a rock band. Finally, at age 17, I met our band’s co-founder and guitar player David Meek who asked me to be the vocalist of his new music project. The rest is history.

Q.) What type of music do you make?

A.)We make rock music, mixed with elements of gothic, progressive, soul, folk and classic music, among many.

Q.) How long have you been making music?

A.)As VOICE OF GLASS, we’ve been making music for over twenty years – since early 2002.

Q.) What are you making music for?

A.)We see music as something we were made to do, something that was given to us by God – the ultimate Artist and Creator, not only as a talent but also as a huge part of who we are. To us, music is the most powerful, unifying, honest art form of all art forms. Imagine movies without a music soundtrack, or dance without music. Music speaks to virtually everyone, reaches everyone in ways other art forms sometimes can’t. You can convey a specific message via a simple song you wouldn’t always be able to communicate out loud in society. We also love music and love making music. This is our passion and ultimate self-expression as music artists.

Q.) What’s driving you?

A.) We’re driven by the desire to always try making new and different, original music material. We want to continue growing as artists who make art that matters. We believe true art should mean something and challenge those who appreciate it. Our motives as artists are sincere and pure – we want to continue creating art that is meaningful, art that challenges us and others to grow as people.”

Q.) Are you signed to a label?

A.)We are working with the indie label “Morpheus Songs” for our latest project.

Q.) Do you want a record deal, a distribution deal, or none?

A.)With the way the music industry is today, we don’t see those things as absolutely necessary. Today’s internet and social media are of great help to many indie artists such as us, providing us with many opportunities and above all, independence. But we also want to get our music heard by as big an audience as possible so we are open to exploring many different ways to make that happen. At the same time, we greatly value the artistic freedom we have as independent artists.

Q.) Who’s one person dead or alive that you’d want to work with?

A.)Jerry Cantrell from ALICE IN CHAINS.

Q.) Is there anybody else you want to shout out for any reason?

A.)We would like to thank Andrew Beldy (Electric Shop Recording and Morpheus Songs) for all his support for our latest project. He not only recorded, mixed, and mastered the three tracks from our “Hours” EP but he also performed bass and backup vocals on some of them. He’s extremely talented, knowledgeable, and all together just a really good person.

Q.) What is your latest release?

A.)Our latest release is a three-tracked EP called “Hours“. For it, we experimented with violins and cellos, making the EP a more mellow and acoustic piece compared to our previous releases. We feel that, at the end, “Hours” has a great vibe to it, corresponding with the more introspective period we have been finding ourselves in lately.

Q.) When is your next release?

A.) We have some projects in the works that could be ready by the end of this year or beginning of the next. We are excited about our future projects; they certainly will be even more fun and upbeat than the last one but we still try to maintain our artistic integrity.
