The complicated relationship between Doja Cat and her father shows no signs of resolution. The Grammy-winning artist, currently in South Africa for a performance in Pretoria, attempted to bridge their long-standing distance by inviting Dumisani Dlamini to her show—only to be rejected.
According to a TikTok video shared with her followers, Doja Cat explained that her father cited insufficient communication as his reason for not attending. “He said he couldn’t make it to my show because I don’t message him enough, and I didn’t call him on WhatsApp,” she recounted.
The 30-year-old artist responded with a provocative prank. She sent her father a link disguised as a ticket source, which actually directed to adult content. Dlamini, a veteran South African actor best known for his role in the 1992 film Sarafina! alongside Whoopi Goldberg, replied that he would forward the matter to his management, citing commitments to costume and rehearsal preparations.
Doja Cat noted the contradiction in his responses—claiming busyness while continuing to engage in the exchange. She then resent the link when he requested the website address again, later mimicking his accent while reading his confused messages aloud to her audience: “Darling, what is this? What I’m seeing is gay porn… I don’t know if it’s a scam.”
The artist labeled her father a “deadbeat” in the video’s caption, a characterization she has used previously. The interaction underscores the persistent estrangement between them; Dlamini has lived in South Africa throughout Doja Cat’s life, while she was raised primarily by her mother in New York and California. The two have reportedly never met in person.
