Mariah Carey Calls Grammys “Overrated” While Hinting at New Album

Mariah Carey isn’t holding back. During a recent appearance on Pitchfork’s Over/Under, the legendary singer weighed in on everything from Crocs to self-driving cars—but it was her take on the Grammys that grabbed attention. Despite 34 nominations and five wins, Carey called the awards show “overrated,” quickly adding, “But we love everybody.”

The comments come as Carey gears up for a new album. Speaking with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden on Apple Music’s 10-year anniversary, she teased the project without revealing too much. “It’s a special occasion… Mimi’s emancipation,” she said, hinting at themes of freedom and reinvention.

Her recent single, “Type Dangerous,” samples Eric B. and Rakim’s classic “Eric B. Is President” and was performed with Rakim at the 2025 BET Awards. Carey described the track as “heavy” with “real weight,” while promising the album will also feature her signature ballads.

With a bold single, an album on the way, and unfiltered opinions on the industry’s biggest stage, Mariah Carey proves she’s still unapologetically herself—and one of music’s most influential voices.
