The Weeknd’s Humanitarian Symphony: A Concert of Compassion in Gaza

In a melody of compassion and solidarity, The Weeknd, internationally acclaimed artist and UN World Food Programme (WFP) Goodwill Ambassador, is orchestrating a significant contribution to support humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Allocating $2.5 million from his XO Humanitarian Fund, The Weeknd’s gesture translates into an extraordinary four million emergency meals, a testament to his commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing crisis.

The urgency of this contribution is palpable, as over one million Gazans find themselves on the brink of starvation since the crisis began on October 7th. Collaborating with UN agencies and local partners, WFP has been diligently providing food assistance to 764,000 Palestinians, demonstrating the impact of collective efforts in times of crisis.

The recent humanitarian pause has allowed WFP to extend its reach, providing essentials such as fresh bread, date bars, canned food, flour, pasta, tomato paste, and oil to over 121,000 people. WFP’s Director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe Region, Corinne Fleischer, acknowledges the gravity of the situation, stating, “Our teams need safe and sustained humanitarian access, and continued support from donors to reach as many people as we can.”

Abel Tesfaye’s dedication to the cause goes beyond this monumental contribution. Since becoming a Goodwill Ambassador in October 2021, he has actively supported WFP’s global hunger-relief mission, contributing $1.8 million in personal donations. With plans to donate a portion of concert ticket sales from his upcoming 2024 After Hours ’til Dawn tour, The Weeknd’s humanitarian symphony echoes as a resounding call to action in the face of adversity.
