Independent by Design: How Ray Detour Turned Obstacles Into Fuel

Born Rashaun Lynch, but known to fans as Ray Detour, the Northern Pennsylvania and West Virginia native has been on a musical journey for nearly his entire life. He started pursuing music at just six years old, and what began as childhood passion has evolved into a deeply personal and independent grind that continues to shape his path today.

Ray Detour’s sound blends rap, hip-hop, and R&B soul, creating a style that reflects both lyrical grit and emotional depth. His story — what he calls his “detour” — is fully authentic and uniquely his own. Since 2013, supporters have followed that journey, growing alongside him as he navigates the highs and lows of the independent music industry.

While he remains proudly independent, Ray has built a small, trusted team around him. Still, he emphasizes that the vision is his alone. “I’m the only one who can articulate my vision because it’s mine,” he explains. Over the years, he’s gained valuable industry feedback and quietly built meaningful relationships, learning when to speak and when to simply observe. Those experiences have helped him understand the standard required to compete at higher levels.

Like many independent artists, Ray has faced closed doors, industry politics, and the struggle of being overlooked or placed as the opening act. Rather than fold under pressure, he’s used those challenges as fuel. For him, obstacles are part of the process — they sharpen resilience and strengthen character.

Collaboration, for Ray, is about energy and mutual respect. Though he often creates solo, he’s open to working with artists who bring the right vibe, as long as business is handled properly.

Looking ahead, Ray Detour plans to release his next single, “Ghost Detour Freestyle,” and expand into visual storytelling through short films tied to his music. His detour, he says, is far from over — and the best chapters are still being written.
