What is your name/stage name?
My stage name is “Mystryl”, ever since its inception.
Where are you from?
I’m from the Netherlands.
How long have you been making music?
I make semi-professional music for two years, but I have been making music
since I was young. In the past I was in two bands and played both guitar
and bass-guitar. I liked playing guitar for many years, but lately lost
my interest. Since then I started to focus on synthesizers and synthesizer
music which I absolutely adore. I also am a trained songwriter and have
done classical compositions. I like synthesizers because they give me
more freedom in creativity and they can do anything I
can fathom with my imagination.
Who’s your biggest inspiration?
There are many great acts out there so it is a difficult choice to narrow down.
But I’ll give you my top five:
1. Sopor Aeternus
2. Dimmu Borgir
3. Moonspell.
4. Rozz Williams
5. Assemblage 23
What genre of music do you create?
I create electro darkwave, which is a an electronic form of darkwave inspired by
the goth scene of the eighties, which I love very dearly. I coined the term electro
darkwave because I had not category to put my music into. I think it perfectly
describes my music and the name wasn’t taken anywhere, which is certainly a plus!
What was it like working with (collabs?)
To date I have done no collaborations, but I am certainly open to it. Even though
I don’t know how that would go.
What are some features you have?
I don’t have any features.
Who’s one person, dead or alive, that you’d want to work with?
Some of my greatest inspiration come from artist who are deceased, but some of them
are still alive. I think if I had to choose it would be Sopor Aeternus, which is my
biggest inspiration and musical mentor. There are others I would’ve love to work
with, but if that ever happens remains a mystery.
Are you signed to a label?
I have my own private label called Century Gothic which started in 2020. It is in the
early stages so nothing is settled yet. I use this to distribute my own music, and
perhaps later on other music.
Do you want a record deal, a distribution deal, or none?
A record deal would be nice, because I am already distributing my own music. But being
indie musician is great as well; I love the freedom that comes with being independent,
but to grow as an artist it would be much better to have a record deal, as with a deal
it is easier to create music for more formats such as vinyl. Have a sum of money
deposited from a label makes investing in my art even more interesting and then
there is no excuse anymore of making something better than before.
Who are your biggest supporters?
Solely myself, I have to be my biggest fan, which I am.
Where did your name come from?
The name is made up, I like mysteries and music that touches the mysterious side. Mystryl
reflects that name perfectly. Even though Mystryl is also a Moon goddess, but that wasn’t
the reason, but I like that.
What are you currently working on?
I am working on a new album, for which I am very excited because I never know where my
music wants to go. Which is both a curse and a blessing. I love that dynamic, it forces
me to be creative and push myself beyond what I already have done. I rarely listen to my
own music, because I want to grow continuously and go forward in my creation. besides,
when listening back there are always things I want to change, and
I know that is a rabbit hole.
What is your latest release?
My latest release is Reflections of the Moon, which is available at mystryl.bandcamp.com
When is your next release?
