Ryan Mitchell Discusses His Alt-Rock Roots & Performing Live

Question: Who inspired you to pursue a career in music?

Ryan Mitchell: A lot of different artists. Growing up, I listened to a lot of Queen and My Chemical Romance. You can hear a lot of that in my music. Blackbear, Billie Eilish, and Post Malone would be others because a primary goal with what I do is to bring a raw soul and grit back into pop music.

Question: Before your solo work, did you ever perform live?

Ryan Mitchell: I did! I sang and wrote in several different punk and rock bands around LA. I appreciate LA too. It has helped me discover my voice. Also, it is great to perform in LA since getting that immediate audience feedback for what works and what doesn’t have been an integral part of my process.

Question: Have you performed any of your new stuff?

Ryan Mitchell: Yes, I have played several shows around Hollywood. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Right now, I play at night, so it does not interfere with my studies at the Thornton School of Music.

Question: What’s your most popular song?

Ryan Mitchell: Well, my most recent one, “Covergirl,” has been streamed over 50,000 times in the first week, so that was a pretty impressive opening for me. I am fortunate enough to work with the UK-based record label “Promoting Sounds,” so I am thrilled to be reaching people.
