San Bernardino Resolves $100 Million Lawsuit Over Fatal Police Shooting

San Bernardino city has recently come to an agreement to resolve a high-profile wrongful death lawsuit, settling for $4 million with the family of Rob Marquise Adams. The case stemmed from a tragic incident in July 2022 when Adams, a young Black man, was fatally shot by police outside an illegal gambling establishment.

The settlement, disclosed last week after a mediation process in February, brings an end to a legal battle that has captured public attention. Originally slated for a trial in June, the city opted for a settlement due to the substantial costs and risks associated with prolonged litigation in federal civil rights cases.

Reports indicate that Adams, 23 at the time of the incident, was shot six times in the back as he attempted to flee from officers Michael Yeun and Imran Ahmed. The officers responded to reports of an armed individual, referred to as “JuJu,” in the parking lot. Upon arrival, they encountered Adams, whom they believed to be armed, leading to the fatal confrontation.

Attorneys representing Adams’ family, including Steven Rothans and Brad Gage, argued that the officers’ actions were unjustified. Gage emphasized that the officers had limited information and no knowledge of Adams’ background before the encounter. The recovery of a firearm, identified as a 9mm Taurus, from a nearby location further complicated the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The resolution of this lawsuit serves as a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue surrounding police conduct and accountability. Civil rights advocates have long called for increased transparency and oversight in cases involving the use of deadly force by law enforcement.

As part of the settlement agreement, further details of the case will be discussed during a forthcoming press conference, shedding light on the events leading up to Adams’ tragic death and the legal implications thereof.
