Acclaimed creative director Laurieann Gibson is reflecting on her time working with Nicki Minaj, arguing that poor management decisions—not a lack of talent—prevented the rap superstar from reaching even greater creative heights.
During a recent appearance on The Jason Lee Show, Gibson praised Nicki as one of the most gifted lyricists of her generation while expressing disappointment with the people she says surrounded the artist during a pivotal stage of her career.
According to Gibson, Minaj possessed extraordinary talent from the very beginning.
She described the Queens rapper as an artist whose lyrical ability was undeniable and recalled being inspired by Nicki’s creativity, confidence, and perspective. Gibson said she viewed her role as helping elevate that vision by encouraging Minaj to embrace her own creative voice.
However, Gibson believes the environment around the rapper eventually changed for the worse.
Speaking candidly, she argued that ego, shifting priorities, and decisions made behind the scenes negatively affected the working relationships that had helped shape Nicki’s artistic growth. Gibson suggested that management failed to protect the rapper’s long-term creative development, saying those closest to her contributed to what she described as unnecessary turmoil.
Despite her criticism of the management structure, Gibson made it clear that she still holds Nicki Minaj in high regard.
She recalled their collaboration during The Pinkprint era as an overwhelmingly positive experience, describing Minaj as an artist with something meaningful to say and praising her passion throughout that period.
Gibson also explained why she chose to step away from the partnership. Drawing on lessons she learned during her previous work with Lady Gaga, she said she recognized familiar behind-the-scenes dynamics and decided it was best to exit before the situation became more difficult.
According to Gibson, tensions escalated after changes in Nicki’s personal and professional circle, leaving her feeling that the management team no longer respected the collaborative creative process.
