Interview With Anthony Joseph Czarnik

What is your name/stage name? My name is Anthony;  I produce as 13faces, and I write under earlygrxves.

Where are you from? I’ve lived in New Jersey all my life.

What do you do?

[Im in a bit of a weird place right now, Im coming out of a seven year  battle with substance abuse; so it sort of feels like resuming where i left off seven years ago. it’s unnerving because the world didn’t stop moving for those years but I completely stopped growing. so i just feel like i’m racing to catch up at this point. Im incredibly grateful for another chance, so I want to take complete advantage of it.]

I’ve had a lot of inspiration since being sober that I can now translate into my music. I’ve been working on producing as 13faces, but I’ve also been starting to pursue my other musical ambitions more. I am currently the drummer of a three-piece hard rock/alternative band called White Clover, and this last month or so we’ve been working on our debut EP.

How long have you been making music?

I started drumming when I was in middle school, I actually joined the school band and played percussion. My friends and I had the amazing opportunity to take some summer sessions with our music teacher to work on learning rock music and playing together. Our school music room also had a couple of the newer Mac desktops that had Garageband installed, and messing around with the loops is where I discovered my affinity for producing music. I also started playing Guitar Hero 3 religiously around that time, which I think paints a pretty clear picture of where my ambitions began.

Who’s your biggest  inspiration?

This is tough, I draw inspiration from so many artists. However, I feel Shannon Hoon is definitely my biggest inspiration, both artistically and personally. His lyrics have helped me through some of the darkest times of my life, and my first tattoo was a piece inspired by Blind Melon’s song Change.

What genre of music do you create?

When it comes to producing, I tend to create an interesting blend of alternative/punk/electronic. I try to incorporate as many different elements as I can, while maintaining  harmony between them. I’ve started to branch out and put together some tracks inspired by video games like Kingdom Hearts. I’m trying to be versatile through the different music outlets I’m pursuing in order to be able broaden my musical horizons meeting new artists.

What was it like working with (collabs?)

Unfortunately I haven’t had any collabs yet, but Im hopeful that will change soon!

What are some features you have?

No features yet either, but again, Im hopeful.

What are some features you want to get?

Poppy Tears has been one of my favorite artists for years now, I would love to be featured on one of his tracks.

hamilton is another artist i’ve been following for quite awhile now, I really dig his musical direction lately, so i’m staying hopeful for the future.

Who’s one person, dead or alive, that you’d want to work with?

I think it’d have to be Layne Staley. He was a phenomenal frontman for Alice in Chains and his performance during the Unplugged show is incredible, and haunting.

Are you signed to a label?

No, currently I am not. With our band EP coming close to completion, I’m hopeful that it will help catalyze something in the future, both with the band and as a producer.

Do you want a record deal, a distribution deal, or none?

Preferably, both. But as we’re only finishing our debut  EP  right now, I think a record deal is definitely the priority right now.

Who are your biggest supporters?

Without a doubt, my parents, friends, and girlfriend. I owe everything I am now to them. They’ve supported me through some pretty dark times, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be someone I feel they can be proud of.

Where did your name come from?

My producer name comes from a combination of my lucky number, 13, and my undying passion for Kingdom Hearts. The ‘faces’ represent the members of Organization XIII, thus 13faces.

earlygrxves comes from a combination of my love for Senses Fail and Kingdom Hearts. Senses Fail wrote a song called Early Graves, and I just thought it would be a cool name to be honest. Not to go too far down the rabbit hole of KH lore, but the ‘x’ in place of an ‘a’ in ‘graves’ represents the Recusant’s Sigil.

What are you currently working on?

As I said earlier, the band is working on finishing up our debut EP. As far as my solo music, I’ve just been working on producing more, higher quality tracks, and I am going to start focusing on writing for my solo project.

What is your latest release?

I just posted my new track , 77 °F, on UnitedMasters earlier today!

When is your next release?

I’m working on a lot currently so I’m not positive when exactly, but I’m hoping to have more tracks on Soundcloud and UnitedMasters by the end of May.
